AEC is responsible for the planning, design and construction of facility improvement projects for the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses. We manage projects of all sizes from new buildings to additions, major renovations, alterations and cosmetic improvements. We use a cross-functional team approach to managing projects. Each project team includes the members necessary to best meet the project’s objectives. A project manager is assigned to lead the project through the design and construction process.

New buildings, additions, and major renovations are managed by the Design Management group and typically include an outside professional design firm for the project’s architectural and engineering services. Other types of renovations are managed by AEC’s Architecture and Engineering (A&E) group, a professional in-house group of architects and engineers. All design professionals must use the university’s Design Guidelines to provide consistency and continuity among projects.

AEC’s Construction Management group is responsible for administration of the construction phase through project closeout, including supervision of construction contractors. In addition, some renovations and alterations are performed by Construction Services, AEC’s in-house skilled trades professionals.

In-house skilled trades professionals also provide services such as painting, cabinet making, upholstery, furniture repair, and signage/graphic work. Projects that require design or engineering review are coordinated with AEC’s A&E group. More information.

Interior Design staff provide design and project management services with the goal of enhancing the function and quality of the interior environment. They work on a wide-range of projects from new construction and major renovations to individual workplaces. Services include space planning, and ordering and installation supervision of furniture and finishes, carpet, and window coverings. More Information.

The Real Estate Office manages the university’s real estate portfolio and provides leasing services. Their responsibilities include acquisition and disposition of real property, property management, and leasing services. More Information.
