Carl Gerstacker Building

Overview

The project has been funded by the College of Engineering, in addition to a gift of $5 million from the Gerstacker Foundation.

The project consists of a 30,000 square foot addition to the north side of the existing IST High Bay Building as well as renovation work in the exiting building. The new addition will provide laboratory and office space for the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Center for Ultrafast Optical Science. Research space for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering will also be provided.

The addition consists of a basement, two main floors and a mechanical penthouse. All new mechanical equipment will be installed in the penthouse to serve the new addition. A new electrical substation is being provided for the addition and to relieve the existing loads on the High Bay Building substation. Fire protection for the existing High Bay Building is also being provided as part of the project.

Construction started in February 2001 and is expected to be complete in November 2002.
